In a year-end article for The New York Times, writer Ben Sisario dubbed 2004 "the year of Usher". In 2004, all 12 songs that topped the Billboard Hot 100 were by African-American recording artists and accounted for 80% of the number-one R&B hits that year. he album's success also exemplified urban music's commercial dominance during the early 2000s, which featured massive crossover success on the Billboard charts by R&B and hip hop artists. The album helped improve declining album sales in the US when music piracy was prevalent. It would eventually go on to sell 10 million in the US and 20 million worldwide. It sold 1.1 million copies in it's first week, becoming the highest ever selling first week sales by an R&B artist. The album spawned 4 #1 singles and was the best selling album of 2004 and the second best selling album of the 2000s decade after Eminem's MMLP. Usher released his diamond selling album 17 years ago today.
